What is the DILF?
The DILF (Diplôme Initial de Langue Française, or initial diploma in French language) is a qualification in French as a foreign language that assesses basic users (level A1.1 of the Council of Europe's Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). It is an initial step towards the DELF and DALF.
Who can take the DILF?
This diploma can be taken by anybody who has a very basic level of competency in French: adult beginners in French as a foreign language and new arrivals in France, who have had little or no education in their country of origin, and are often not able to read or write.
The exam
The DILF assesses the 4 language skills: listening, reading, speaking, writing. The DILF is based on the knowledge, expertise, interpersonal skills and learning skills that are part of the ability to communicate by way of language at linguistic, sociolinguistic and pragmatic level. This ability can be used when performing varied language activities in comprehension, expression and interaction.
The exam is composed of 4 units:
>> Listening comprehension
- understanding a public announcement
- understanding a simple message
- understanding simple instructions
- understanding numerical information, understanding the time
>> Reading comprehension
- understanding signs
- understanding simple instructions
- understanding basic information
- understanding numerical information
- recognising the type and function of simple texts
>> Spoken production
- Interview with the panel
- Expression activities
>asking for and giving a price
>introducing people or describing places
>expressing a need or making an appointment
>indicating the nature of a health problem
>> Written production
- copying down an address, a telephone number
- writing down a number, a price, a date
- filling in a form
- leaving a simple message
